Samsung boosts SSD capacity to 1,000TB with 1,000-layer chip

Samsung Electronics unveiled plans for the development of the SSD ecosystem at Samsung Tech Day 2022.Company

plans to create the most advanced NAND chip, which will consist of more than a thousand layers.

The plan should be implemented by 2030.The company's message does not say whether the product will be put into mass production by this date or only a prototype is ready, on the basis of which new products will be built in the future.

The creation of such a chip will allow the companyproduce solid-state drives with a capacity of up to 1 Pb (1000 TB). The prospect of creating such a voluminous carrier for information seems quite tempting, Tech Radar experts say, especially in the face of competition and the development of alternative means of data storage: quartz, tapes, DNA, and others.

More Layers Doesn't Only Mean Cheaperproducts, but also higher storage density. For example, the Nimbus Data SSD currently provides the largest storage capacity. The 3.5-inch model based on a 64-layer chip allows you to store 100 TB. This development shows that Samsung can achieve its goal: if you stack this chip up to 1024 layers, the capacity will exceed 1PB.

For comparison, the manufacturer of hard drives (HDD)Seagate plans to increase its storage capacity to only 100TB by 2030, while the company's devices are currently capped at 26TB.
