Samsung Deutschland invites user to smash an SSD with a hammer to get a new drive under warranty

The German division of Samsung decided to take the protection of the personal data of its customers to a new level.

Known

A resident of Germany bought a Samsung 980 Pro SSDwith a capacity of 2 TB. While using the Samsung Magician, he found that the drive was almost non-functional due to memory problems. The user decided to change the SSD under warranty, but did not want Samsung to have even theoretical access to the data. The German could not delete the files due to a malfunction in the memory chip.

As a result, the technical support specialistSamsung Deutschland offered the user to physically disable the SSD before shipping - drill or smash with a hammer. In this case, the owner of the disk must record this process on video.

Note that the standard practice for replacing an SSDassumes that drives are shipped without physical damage. For this reason, many private customers and large companies do not replace defective drives under warranty for fear of leaking confidential data.
