Samsung Galaxy Watch Active review: stylish, sporty and functional

</ img>

At the beginning of 2019, Samsung presented its 10th anniversary line of flagship smartphones. Of course, all attention

the public was focused on them, but the new itemssmartphones are not over, the company presented new fitness bracelets Galaxy Fit and Fit and “smart” Galaxy Watch Active. They complement the existing line and act in a slightly different category, unlike the Samsung Galaxy Watch 42 and 46 mm, which have not lost their relevance. The Galaxy Watch Active has a lower price tag, a different design and is slightly different in functionality. Let's try to figure out what happened as a result and who would suit such a smart watch.

How are they interesting and how do they differ from previous models?

</ img>

Galaxy Watch Active differs significantly indesign, size and construction from the older brothers. The screen is still round, but the diagonal has decreased to 1.1 inches, while maintaining the 360x360 resolution, SuperAMOLED matrix and Always on Display function. The case is still protected from dust and water according to IP68 and MIL-STD-810G standards and can withstand pressure of 5 ATM, that is, washing in them is no problem, swimming is within reasonable limits. The hardware is all close to the Samsung Galaxy Watch models: the same 10-nanometer dual-core Exynos 9110 processor at 1.15 GHz, 768 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal memory. The user has at his disposal a heart rate sensor, an accelerometer, a barometer, a gyroscope, a GPS module and a light sensor for automatic brightness adjustment. Of course, all this goodness is used for an abundance of proprietary software that monitors heart rate, stress, sleep, and tracks all kinds of physical activity, both automatically and manually. The operating system is Wearable OS 4.0 based on Tizen, and the Bixby voice assistant is supported. The watch has a microphone, but they decided to remove the speaker, so for conversations you will have to take a smartphone, and the microphone will be useful for voice commands. There are wireless modules Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC, which in this case is useful only for quick pairing. The company is not launching Samsung Pay in Ukraine, but it also does not want to introduce support for Google Pay. The battery capacity has decreased to 230 mAh. They promise 15 hours at maximum load (outdoor activities with constant GPS operation) and 90 hours in the most gentle mode.

What is in the box?

</ img>

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active comes ina small white cardboard box with a picture of a clock. The kit includes only the essentials: the watch itself, a wireless charger with a magnetic clasp, and one and a half sets of straps. One part with a clasp and two additional parts of different lengths for different wrists.

What is the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active?

</ img>

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active has become noticeably smallerand lighter than its older neighbors in the lineup. Now it is a very compact gadget, round in shape with rounded protective glass and edges. Visually, it's still a watch (not a fitness tracker) thanks to the round display. But the design has become very minimalist, and there is no bezel at all. So they feel more “unisex”, and not like a typical male model. The case is metal, the weight without strap is only 25 g, so they do not interfere with the hand at all.

</ img>

The watch has lost its bezel, so nowControl is provided only by the touch screen and two buttons on the right side. It’s more convenient with a bezel, but still quite adequate. The top one is “back”, the bottom one is “home/food”. They are interestingly made: the upper one has a matte surface and a glossy edging, the lower one is the opposite:

</ img>

Two holes are visible at the top of the watch: this is an atmospheric pressure sensor and a microphone:

</ img>

On the rear panel is a large optical heart rate sensor. Apparently, similar to those installed in the Samsung Galaxy Watch 42 and 46. Above it is a small hole to reduce pressure:

</ img>

The strap is removable, standard 20 mm, so you canwill easily pick replaceable. Fastened as before, using a spring mechanism. Both the watch and the strap were of the most classic black color. There are already enough variants of silicone straps on sale in different colors, both flat and with longitudinal relief:

</ img>

The clasp is practically unremarkable,standard design with a tongue, but the end of the strap is hidden through a hole under the other half. There were no questions about the included strap: it is soft and comfortable:

</ img>

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active outwardly turned outuniversal option that is suitable for both men and women. Explicit sex is not, although a matter of taste. I still like the models massively and with the bezel: they are more reminiscent of the classics.

What about the screen and hardware stuffing?

</ img>

The screen of the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active has a diagonal1.1 inches and resolution 360x360. The older models have a similar resolution, but the diagonal is 1.2 and 1.3 inches. The frame around the perimeter is very noticeable, but in relation to the watch this cannot be called a disadvantage. And if you use a black background of the main screen, then it will blend in quite aesthetically. with screen. The entire front panel is covered with protective glass with rounded edges and a very good oleophobic coating. The display itself is of excellent quality, with maximum viewing angles and rich colors. The brightness reserve is sufficient: in the sun the picture fades, but the information remains readable. There is automatic brightness adjustment and Always on Display:

Internals of the Samsung Galaxy Watch Activesimilar to the older Galaxy Watch: dual-core 10nm Exynos 9110 processor clocked at 1.15 GHz, 768 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal memory. Wearable OS 4.0 (Tizen variation) is not too power hungry and there are no slowdowns or glitches, the interface and applications work smoothly. Some of the internal storage is occupied by the OS and applications, about 1.5 GB is free out of the box, where you can upload pictures or music for classes. The watch can be used as a player with a Bluetooth headset. The sensors include: heart rate monitor, accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope and light sensor, wireless interfaces: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 and NFC. Google Pay support has still not been delivered, and Samsung Pay has not been launched, so you won’t be able to pay for hours. And it doesn't look like that's going to change anytime soon. To determine the location, a module supporting GPS, Glonass, Beidou, and Galileo positioning systems is used.

What about charging and battery?

</ img>

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active recharged fromwireless storage device. It is made in the form of a small disk with a magnet and a fixed cable. Qi standard is used, so theoretically they can be charged from third-party charges. Or from the S10 smartphones, of course.

</ img>

The watch is equipped with a 230 mAh battery.The battery life of smart watches is always difficult to estimate unambiguously. It very much depends on the usage scenario and can vary from literally a couple of hours (for example, classes with constant tracking of GPS, heart rate, maximum brightness, playing music through headphones, and so on) to about 3 days with wireless interfaces other than GPS turned off and very gentle use in general. On average it took me 1.5 days. This is constant heart rate tracking, Always on Display at low brightness, GPS only with auto-detection of fast walking, notifications and one workout with recording of several exercises.

What with interface and features?

</ img>

Samsung Galaxy Watch is powered by Tizen updated version 4.0.0.3. All this we have already seen in the Samsung Galaxy Watch. There are a lot of options for dials with customization and various output data.

</ img>

A set of widgets that you can drag onas you wish, a separate menu with all applications and a dispatcher, in which you can close all open applications at once. From the new notice, perhaps, only the notice on the home screen (dial). They are caused by a bottom-up movement and display a change in the weather, or, for example, a notice of stress and recommendations for breathing exercises.

In terms of fitness features, the Samsung GalaxyWatch Active has everything you need: counting steps, including a route, tracking sleep, heart rate, stress level, workouts. Some cardio exercises are tracked automatically. Strength training - you need to turn it on yourself, but the number of repetitions is counted correctly, while the watch monitors your heart rate level. And they notify you with vibration if it is higher than the permissible value. All this is recorded in a journal. You can also manually record the amount of water and coffee you drink. I didn't have any complaints about the tracking accuracy. It tracks steps, stress (yes, I was right), sleep, exercise repetitions, speed and everything else quite accurately. Pulse is also within the permissible error: no more than 3-4%.

The watch supports third-party applications forsports, for example, Workout Trainer or Under Armor Record. But the native developments are also very functional: there are a bunch of exercises, with the ability to flexibly configure the required number of approaches, repetitions, breaks between approaches, and so on. For me, the native application was quite enough for my purposes.

Beyond fitness apps on the Samsung Galaxy WatchActive pre-installed music player, weather, alarm clock, reminders, application for finding a paired phone, gallery, baro-altimeter, applications for calls and messages, Bixby, Spotify. You can respond to messages directly from the watch: with a template, using a virtual keyboard, a preset response, or dictate using the built-in microphone. There are third-party applications; Here Maps, an application for remote control of a smartphone camera, Workout Trainer, Under Armour, Uber, Uklon, Nova Poshta, Portmone, Eda.ua may be useful:

In the process of pairing on the smartphone are installedplug-in applications and Samsung Wearable, with which you can customize the clock. In fact, everything that is in the clock is duplicated, but on the big screen it is much more convenient. There is a setting for notifications, widgets, screen, installation of applications, dials. Also, using the application, you can upload music and pictures to the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active:

In the dry residue

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active - a good examplethat less does not mean worse. At the moment, the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active is one of the most tempting “smart” hours in terms of price-performance ratio. The watch has maximum (or close to maximum) fitness functionality, a stylish, versatile appearance, small dimensions and weight, protection from external influences and water resistance of 5 ATM. At the same time, there is a high-quality SuperAMOLED screen traditional for the line with Always On Display and a bunch of additional functions, including a music player, the ability to reply to a message (including by voice) and a bunch more, including downloadable additional applications. The only downsides that can be noted are the low autonomy and the absence of a proprietary bezel, with which it is really more convenient to control the watch. Of the competitors, only the Huawei Watch GT can be distinguished, which costs exactly the same. They live much longer on a single charge and are larger in size (including the screen), but functionally they can do much less than anything else.

5 reasons to buy Samsung Galaxy Watch:

 • stylish, versatile appearance;
 • protection to IP68 and MIL-STD-810G standards and 5 ATM water resistance;
 • high-quality AMOLED display;
 • availability of all necessary sensors, sensors and wireless interfaces;
 • a large number of functions.

2 reasons not to buy Samsung Galaxy Watch:

 • modest battery life;
 • No branded swivel bezel.
