Satellites OneWeb and SpaceX dodged collision with each other

OneWeb and SpaceX satellites avoided dangerous approach to each other in orbit, it was announced

representatives of the US Space Force and OneWeb. It's the first dangerous situation for the two rival companies as they expand their broadband networks into space.

Researchers assessed the likelihood of a collisionat 1.3%, while two satellites approached to 57 meters - this is a dangerous proximity for satellites in orbit. If the satellites collided in orbit, it could cause a catastrophe that would create hundreds of pieces of debris and change their trajectory, endangering other devices.

Experts also noted that now there is nono national or global space organization that regulates satellite operators to respond to potential collisions. Companies only have Space Force urgent alerts to companies that require devices to keep a safe distance from each other.

Companies have an automated systemAI-powered collision avoidance, however, researchers found that SpaceX had disabled the system. The US Space Force will investigate why this happened.

SpaceX's automated system that allowsavoiding satellite collisions has sparked controversy - scientists argue that they have no way of knowing how the system will move the Starlink satellite in the event of a close encounter. “This problem is not enough to say about an automated system, because sometimes it may not help us,” the researchers noted.
