Scientists add Mentos to Coca-Cola on top of a mountain

The experiment with adding Mentos dragees to Diet Coca-Cola became popular in 2006 - after the release of the episode

show "MythBusters", in which the hostsexplained the process that occurs during the experiment. It is worth noting that diet Coca-Cola is not sold in Russia—the company sells Coca Cola Zero drink instead.

The reason for the sharp foaming of Coca-Cola whenthe addition of "Mentos" is that with the addition of aspartame and subject to the microporosity of the dragee, the low surface tension of the beverage leads to an increase in the ability to form bubbles on its surface.

The main goal of the new study wasdemonstration of the Boyle-Mariotte law - and the experiment was chosen for greater clarity. The researchers climbed the Pikes Peak mountain in Colorado and dropped a pellet into the drink every 300 m, measuring the amount of foam released.

The higher the researchers went, the moreCoca-Cola released the foam when Mentos was added. So, if about 600 ml of foam was released at the foot of the mountain, then at the top, located at an altitude of about 4 thousand meters above sea level, its amount grew four times - up to 1.8 thousand ml.

Earlier it was reported that scientists from Ural Federal University will develop a universal model for changing matter in space.
