Scientists create mutant barley to improve beer

After an unexpected period of rain, before the harvest begins, a farmer may face unpredictable

the problem of untimely germination of barley. Scientists have found a way to solve this problem. Discuss

To get the perfect barley, scientistsused CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing technology. The authors of the new scientific work explained that they realized the need for strategic crop management.

Scientists genetically modified samples of Golden Promise barley so that they were either single mutants or double mutants. They then studied how mutants and non-mutants germinate.

All mutants showed delayed germination. Germination was facilitated by treatment with hydrogen peroxide. In addition, all mutants showed accumulation of abscisic acid.

This technology will make it possible to obtainhigh quality barley for beer. The researchers also hope that they can solve food and environmental problems using improved biotechnological methods.
