Scientists figured out how to search for the building blocks of the universe in a new way

An unusual atom, consisting of an ordinary cesium atom and an elementary particle (muon), will be useful for better

understanding the fundamental building blocks of the Universe.

"Astrophysical and cosmological observationsshowed that the matter we know about makes up only five percent of the matter and energy contained in the Universe,” said Jacinda Ginges of the University of California School of Mathematics and Physics, referring to Standard Model particles in physics.

Most matter is dark, and scientists stillThey do not know a single particle or interaction within the Standard Model that explains this imbalance. “The search for dark matter particles is at the forefront of particle physics research, and our work with cesium may be important in solving this mystery,” write the study authors.

Thanks to theoretical research, scientistsimproved understanding of the magnetic structure of the cesium nucleus, its effects in atomic cesium, and the effects of the muon. A muon is essentially a heavy electron. It is 200 times more massive and orbits the nucleus 200 times closer than electrons. Thanks to this, it can capture details of the structure of the nucleus.

“It sounds difficult, but in a nutshell, this workwill improve the atomic theory calculations used in the search for new particles,” explains Jacinda Ginges. The researchers said the new approach will offer greater sensitivity and an alternative method for finding new particles by using precise atomic measurements.
