BepiColombo is a joint mission of the Europeanspace agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), recorded sound with a magnetometric instrument, which provided a rare insight into the interaction between the flow of charged particles flying from the sun, that is, the solar wind, and the dense atmosphere of Earth's closest neighbor, rich carbon dioxide.
Audio recording is not real sound that can be heard in space, but the so-called sonification, the translation of data into sounds, the ESA said in a statement.
BepiColombo flew past Venus on August 10,just a day after another inner solar system explorer, Solar Orbiter, made its close approach to a space object. This allowed scientists to measure the environment around Venus from multiple points for the first time.
Solar Orbiter, a joint ESA / NASA mission,has in its instrument set a magnetometer similar to the BepiColombo. He made his own measurements of the interaction between the solar wind and the planet, flying on August 9 at a distance of 8 thousand km.
Researchers have published multiple versionssounds. The first is the onboard accelerometer data translated into audio recording. Another version is the sonification of the magnetometer data. It demonstrates the process of interaction of the solar wind with the planet's atmosphere.
