Scientists found coronavirus in semen of infected COVID-19 patients

The study was conducted on an extremely small sample for such work - it included only 38 men lying in

one hospital, Shangqiu. Six of them had a new type of coronavirus detected in their semen samples - while four still had COVID-19, and two recovered.

The authors of the work did not conduct long-term observations, so it is unclear how long the virus remains in the semen of patients and whether it can be transmitted through sexual contact.

The findings of the researchers contrast sharply withanother work of Chinese scientists, which was also carried out on a small sample. None of the 34 men who took part in the experiment was detected in semen.

Dr. John Hotaling from the University of Utah,co-author of the new study, noted that it involved men with more severe symptoms than in previous work. Moreover, most of them were ill at the time of the study.

Previously, scientists found that coronavirus survives regardless of air temperature and latitude - in other words, a warm or cold climate does not affect the speed of its spread.
