Today, wireless charging is advertised asthe most convenient way to charge an electronic device, but this is not always the case: most of the time the gadget should lie on a rug or a certain surface, so using it and charging it at the same time is not very convenient.
In the new work, the authors tried to get around thisproblem. They made a whole room in which you can freely move around and charge devices. They placed capacitors in the walls that create magnetic fields.
This technology is known as quasi-staticresonance: lumped capacitors that are in walls have conductive surfaces. Therefore, a three-dimensional magnetic field appears in the room and at the same time the electric fields remain trapped inside the capacitors. Coil receivers in phones or light bulbs can pick up this magnetic field and receive energy.
The team tested the system in a room sized3x3x2 m and found that the efficiency of electricity supply is at least 50% in almost the entire volume of the room. The signal was strongest when the receiver coil was at right angles to the magnetic field. The power can be as high as 50W or more, according to the team.
