The researchers used a piezoelectrican organic material that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice versa to create needle-shaped crystals, the length of which does not exceed 2 mm in length and 0.2 mm in width. Due to the unique molecular structure of the material, at each break, the forces of gravity reconnect its parts, without the need for additional external factors, such as heat, which are necessary for most self-healing materials.
“Our self-healing material is 10 timesis harder than others and has an ordered internal crystal structure that is used in most electronic and optical applications, ”explains the study's lead author, Professor Chilla Malla Reddy of IISER.
Scientists say their design is ideal for smartphone screens. According to them, the new material is ten times harder than analogs.
