The researchers interviewed 4160 Norwegians agedfrom 18 to 89 years old. 66% of women and 84% of men reported having masturbated in the past month. Most of the women said they did it two or three times a month. At the same time, most men reported masturbating two or three times a week.

It was also found that women with higherfrequency of intercourse more often reported high frequency of masturbation and high sexual satisfaction. That is, for women, this practice usually performs an additional, rather than a substitute function.

But among men, frequent viewing of pornography was associated with sexual dissatisfaction. That is, their masturbation performs a compensatory function.
