Scientists have discovered two Earth-like planets that could potentially be habitable

Researchers have been able to discover two exoplanets that could be habitable. They rotate

around the star GJ 1002.

What is known

GJ 1002 is a red dwarf locatedat a distance of 16 light years from the solar system. Scientists have been observing the star for several years using the CERMENES (2017-2019) and ESPRESSO (2019-2021) instruments.

After analyzing the data collected over 5 years, experts concluded that the planets GJ 1002b and GJ 1002c revolve around the star with a period of approximately 10 and 21 days, respectively. The first planet is closer to the red dwarf. Being close to the star does not pose a threat, since the mass of GJ 1002 is only an eighth of the mass of the Sun.

The next step is to analyze the atmosphere atplanets GJ 1002b and GJ 1002c. But scientists will be able to start working on it only after the start of operation of the Extremely Large Telescope, equipped with a 40-meter mirror and a sensitive ANDES spectrograph, i.e. no earlier than 2030.
