Scientists have figured out how dangerous bacteria manage to survive in the human body

infectious bacteria are used to quicklyadaptation to environmental stress. The discovery may help explain why some diseases, such as urinary tract and bloodstream infections (sepsis), are so difficult to get rid of.

A special mechanism changes the way bacteriaproduce special proteins that do most of the work in cells. This improves the bacteria's chances of survival in stressful situations. The new research will be useful in the development of antimicrobial drugs and vaccines, scientists say.

It's all about the bacterial enzyme MiaA,which was discovered by accident. It appears to be particularly sensitive to environmental stress and plays a central role in the regulation of protein expression. In one experiment, scientists created a version of a particularly pathogenic bacterium that lacked the gene encoding MiaA. 

MiaA-deficient bacteria did not grow well and did notcaused urinary tract infections or sepsis in mice. When scientists manipulated bacteria to express too much MiaA, the same thing happened. “There appears to be a Goldilocks zone where the right amount of MiaA provides an optimal stress response,” the scientists conclude.
