Scientists have figured out how to irradiate planes and houses. This will make them strong and flexible.

The authors of the new work said that gamma and microwave irradiation of polymers helps change them

structure, as well as physical and mechanical properties. Namely, the main chain of molecules is destroyed and smaller fragments are formed, or the molecules form a more durable series.

Polymer composites based on three-dimensional cross-linkedelastomeric matrix filled with solid particles is used in automobile, aircraft and shipbuilding, as well as in solid rocket fuels. Abrasive materials that contain corundum allow for high-quality grinding. Elastic polymers filled with quartz are used for coating buildings and decking in sports facilities.

But the authors note that researchers have not previously studied the effects of radiation on such materials.

Scientists conducted an experiment to understand howThere are changes in the mechanical characteristics of polymer composites - the latter are made on the basis of low-molecular rubbers. They used different doses of gamma and microwave irradiation.

In the first experiment, the strength of materials increaseswith increasing radiation dose. The maximum is obtained at 20 Mrad. If the temperature is increased, this leads to a decrease in strength. According to scientists, this can be explained by the fact that with an increase in the dose of radiation, the degree of cross-linking of the molecules of the polymer composite increases.

In the second case, the mechanical characteristicspolymers change at an absorbed energy density of microwave radiation of 126.9 MJ/m³. According to the researchers, using microwave technology, you can get more durable products.
