Astronomers from the University of Western Sydneyobserved it with a conventional telescope and saw the oval shape of a typical elliptical galaxy. But while observing the galaxy with the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) super-telescope operated by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), they discovered something unusual.
By analyzing radio waves recorded by the telescope,astronomers have detected a jet of matter ejected from the galaxy by a central black hole. In the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) study, astronomers noted that matter between galaxies is pushed off the sides of the jet. This has been found to be similar to the effect seen in jet aircraft.
When the exhaust plume breaks throughatmosphere, the ambient pressure pushes it from side to side. This, in turn, causes the jet to expand and contract, causing it to pulsate as it travels. The pulsation appears as regular bright spots.
