As a group of Australian researchers found,dark beetle larvae can help people get rid of plastic waste completely. The fact is that these organisms feed on polystyrene, that is, one of the types of plastic.
According to study leader Chris Rinke,although other small worms (flour and wax worms) can eat plastic, they eat very little of it. At the same time, Zophobas morio are able to reach 5 cm and consume the same amount of garbage.
Experts also conducted an experiment.They divided all the Zophobas morio worms into three groups, each of which was given a certain food or left without food for three weeks. One group received polystyrene foam, the second – bran, the third was hungry.
As a result, it turned out that worms are capable ofeating only plastic and even gaining mass at the same time. After all the research comes to an end, experts will have a chance to create a new method of dealing with plastic waste.
