Their methodology was based on the usesunlight, regolith and atmospheric carbon dioxide of the planet. It is reported that the carbon needed for this process as a reducing agent can be obtained by cooling carbon monoxide, which in turn is obtained through the electrolysis of CO2 from the Martian atmosphere.
In the same way, experts suggest using it to simultaneously obtain oxygen for breathing.
Note that the method assumes that CO can also be condensed to produce carbon, which is great for being reused for carbothermal reduction.
