Available evidence suggests that DNA methylation patterns change throughout life and reflect biological aging.
Scientists have tested for the first time the flexibility of biologicalage in mice. They surgically connected pairs of young and old mice so that their bloodstreams merged for three months, resulting in a significant increase in the biological age of the younger mice. After separating the mice for two months, the researchers found that the age increase was reversed.
The researchers then studied the shiftsat the biological age of people who have undergone major surgery, given birth, or received intensive care for severe COVID-19 infections. Blood samples from elderly patients undergoing emergency surgery showed a surge in biological age within 24 hours after surgery, but their ages dropped back to preoperative levels within one to two weeks.
However, patients with COVID-19 who have survivedinfection, did not return to normal so quickly. While women returned to their pre-coronavirus biological age within two weeks, men failed. This means that recovery time may depend on the type of stress and gender.
In blood samples from pregnant women, the researchers found a peak in biological age around the time of birth, which returned to previous levels on average within six weeks after birth.
