The clitoris has over 10,000 nerve fibers.A new study has found that some female snakes also have it. Compared to their male counterparts, the female genitalia are remarkably under-researched, limiting the academic understanding of sexual reproduction in vertebrates, the press release said.
After studying many snakes, scientists have found red blood cells and nerves that correspond to erectile tissue. According to the study, scientists found all the signs of a clitoris.
“The study opens up new questions about the dynamicsmating snakes and raises new questions about female anatomy,” said Jenna Crowe-Riddell, PhD, study co-author and expert in neuroecology at La Trobe University.
As ABC reports, scientists now want morelearn about how the snake clitoris varies between species. “It’s one thing to know that snakes have a clitoris. It’s another matter to understand why he’s there and what he’s doing,” write the authors of the study.
