Scientists have uncovered the secret of strange radio circles a million light-years wide

The radio circles were called ORK. Their nature still remains a mystery, but new data obtained using

South African MeerKAT telescope are helping to unravel it.

According to the authors, these objects are difficult to study,since they are very weak, they form rarely and do not appear in the optical, infrared or x-ray range. At an early stage, astronomers were not even sure whether the observed object was huge and located far away or, conversely, small and located within our galaxy.

More recent observations have helped determinesize and distance of ORCs: their width is about a million light years. This is about 16 times the size of the Milky Way. It is also interesting that ORCs were concentrated in galaxies with active supermassive black holes in the core.

According to the authors of the new work, at the center of eachORC is a galaxy, but it is very small and faint, so it was difficult or almost impossible to fix it earlier. Most likely, these circles are huge explosions of hot gas about a million light-years in size: they come from the central galaxy.

The researchers were able to put forward three main hypotheses about the origin of ORC:

  • These are the remnants of huge explosions in the center of the galaxy, for example, after the merger of two supermassive black holes. 
  • These are round jets of energy particles ejected from the center of the galaxy. 
  • These are shock waves from the formation of stars in the galaxy.

Further observations will help determine which version is closest to the truth.
