Scientists measure how oceans freeze on other planets: so you can find out where there is life

The icy moons of Jupiter and Saturn, in particularEuropa, Ganymede and Titan are the main objects that could potentially harbor life. These ice-covered moons are believed to have vast liquid oceans, several dozen times the volume of the oceans on Earth.

The oceans on these moons may contain different types of salts. Scientists suggest that their depth reaches 160 km on Europa to more than 643 km on Titan.

The authors of the new work focused on the eutectic,or the lowest temperature at which a saline solution can remain liquid until completely frozen. It is noted that salt water remains liquid at temperatures lower than pure water.

The researchers tested solutions of fivevarious salts at a pressure of 3,000 times atmospheric pressure. This is about three times higher than the pressure in Earth's deepest ocean trench.

The new data could help researchers better understand the complex geological processes that occur on planets and moons.
