Scientists photographed a rare galaxy in which there is a lot of dark matter

The new galaxy was designated Tucana B. It is the first extinct and isolated object of its type. Super dim

dwarf galaxies (UFD), which includeTucana B emit little light but have a lot of dark matter. Therefore, astronomers have always regarded them as living fossils from which they can learn more about the early Universe.

Galaxy Tucana B

The research team used data from the DESI Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument as well as an interactive color image viewer.

They found Tucana B, which is located 4.5 million light years from Earth. The galaxy has a radius of about 260 light years. Apparently, it consists only of old stars that have little metal.

Astronomers noted that Tucana B has a low brightness, no new stars are formed in it, but there is neutral gas. This set of factors distinguishes it from other recently discovered galaxies.

Moreover, Tucana B is located very isolated from other objects. This indicates that star formation in it has ceased due to reionization or another internal event.

Astronomers plan to continue studying the object to understand why stars stop forming in such galaxies.
