Scientists test the idea of ​​treating Alzheimer's disease with sleeping pills

Scientists have previously linked poor sleep to developmentneurodegenerative disease, and if the patient has AD, their sleep is disrupted many years before symptoms of cognitive decline appear. Both problems are associated with the accumulation of tau protein and amyloid beta. These proteins form plaques in the brain that damage neurons and lead to the development of AD.

Washington University School of Medicine staffUniversity divided 38 study participants into three groups and conducted a sleep study over two nights. The first group, the control group, did not take medications. The second was a low dose of suvorexant (10 mg), an insomnia medication. It blocks orexin, a molecule in the body that naturally keeps us awake. The third is an increased dose of the drug (20 mg).

Throughout the study, subjectsA small amount of cerebrospinal fluid was collected every two hours. It turned out that in the group taking a higher dose of suvorexant, the level of hyperphosphorylated tau protein decreased by 10-15%, and amyloid by 10-20%. Subjects who received a lower dose of the drug did not show a statistically significant decrease in any of the proteins.

The scientists stress that this was a very small study and a larger experiment is required. “This is still a proof of concept,” the researchers write.
