Scientists told at what maximum temperature and humidity a person can survive

Hot humid weather can be measured using Wet Bulb Temperature - this is when

the temperature of an object is measured with a thermometer, bodywhich is wrapped in damp gauze. Due to adiabatic evaporation, the wet-bulb temperature is always lower than the dry-bulb temperature, except when the air humidity is 100%.

During the heat wave that swept South Asia in May and JuneIn 2022, Jakobabad, Pakistan recorded a maximum humid air temperature of 33.6°C, close to the theoretical upper limit of human adaptation.

In a 2010 study, it was calculated that35°C and 100% humidity or 46°C and 50% humidity is the upper safe limit. Further, the human body ceases to cool in the usual way - evaporating sweat from the surface of the body to maintain a stable temperature.

Only recently have these findings been tested on humans in laboratory conditions. 

Each participant swallowed a small gadget,which monitored his body temperature. The volunteers were then placed in a chamber where they imitated familiar activities such as cooking and eating. The researchers slowly raised either the temperature in the chamber or the humidity and monitored when the subject's body temperature began to rise.

In a study of young, healthy men and women, the upper environmental limit was found to be even lower than the theoretical 35°C.

Proven limit: 31°C at 100% humidity or 38°C at 60%.
