Scientists told how the life expectancy of Europeans has decreased for the pandemic

Researchers and the University of Oxford found a decline in life expectancy in 2020

For men , life expectancy has fallen by more than a year in 11 countries. For women, the same deterioration was observed in 8 countries.

Life expectancy (LE) -the value of the average life expectancy projected on the assumption that the mortality rates of the population at all ages in the future will remain the same as in the year under consideration. In other words, this is the arithmetic average of the number of years lived by a certain group of people. For example, there are five people who lived to be 50 years old and five people lived to be 100 years old. Their total average life expectancy is 75 years.

In the Middle Ages, the life expectancy iswas only 30 years old. The last major decline in this indicator in European countries was observed during the Second World War. Then life expectancy decreased by 5-10 years.

The COVID-19 pandemic has become another devastatingfactor. It has claimed the lives of 4.5 million people and reduced life expectancy around the world. Scientists from Oxford analyzed mortality from all causes in 29 countries of Europe, the United States, and Chile for 2020, taking into account the factor of COVID-19. As a result, the experts calculated the life expectancy at the time of birth. These values were compared with those of 2019.

The researchers found that life expectancy declined in 27 of the 29 countries studied. In 11 countries, including the United States and Lithuania, life expectancy in men decreased by more than a year.In 8 countries (including the United States, Spain, and Belgium), thisThe worst situation isin the United States (where a man's life expectancy decreased by 2.2 years) and in Lithuania (life expectancy decreased by 1.7 years).

The authors of the study also published a graph detailing the results for each country.
