Scientists believe that the history of humanSettlement began on these hills near the Syrian border about 12,000 years ago when groups of Stone Age hunter-gatherers came together to build these sites.
Göbekli Tepe in southeastern Turkey is consideredthe oldest known temple complex not only in Asia, but throughout the world. The sanctuary consisted of two dozen round stone buildings, as well as T-shaped columns with images of birds, animals, snakes, spiders and scorpions.
Göbekli Tepe, according to some experts, has never really been inhabited. But it may be part of a vast sacred landscape.
Initially, it was believed that this place was purely ritual in nature. But at present, archaeologists have evidence that a settled life began there.
