A bizarre aurora-like phenomenon known as STEVE has appeared several times in the US

STEVE (strong thermal emission velocityenhancement, rus. strong increase in the rate of thermal radiation) is a rare phenomenon officially discovered in 2016. The phenomenon appears as a long, thick streak of light (usually white, purple, or green) in the sky. It can be observed for about an hour. Although it is very similar to the aurora and often appears simultaneously, STEVE is a different kind of phenomenon.

March 23 unexpected coronal mass ejection(CME)—a giant, fast-moving blob of plasma and magnetic field emitted by the Sun—has erupted from a massive coronal hole on a star. It was 20 times wider than the Earth. At the same time, astronomers did not notice the approach of a hidden solar storm. This is because it moved much slower than regular MCUs and was nearly impossible to track. The resulting geomagnetic storm on Earth was the most powerful in six years and caused spectacular auroras around the world.
