A team of researchers has developed the most detailed model of geological changes on Earth to date.

Research for the first time with such high accuracyshows how modern geophysical landscapes were formed and how the face of the Earth changed over millions of years. In addition, the modeling takes into account for the first time how mineral deposits formed on the surface of the continents are blown into the ocean with the help of wind and rivers and affect subsequent processes.
Scientists have created a model of Global Scalable PaleoLandscape Evolution (goSPL for short). It includes the dynamics of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, tectonic plates and the planet's mantle. For the study, goSPL is combined with past global climate models and reconstructions of historical plate tectonics. Several hundred computer processors have calculated the change in the Earth over the past 100 million years.

The researchers believe that the new model will allowscientists to test various theories as to how the Earth's surface will respond to climate change and tectonic forces, and it will also help predict possible future changes. Reassessing the impact of ocean transport will help to better date fossilized deposits from past eras.
