See how two clusters of galaxies collide

The authors of the new work studied data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, namely information about the pair

colliding galaxy cluster Abell 2146. They are located approximately 2.8 billion light years from Earth.

Clusters of galaxies contain hundreds of galaxies, andalso a huge amount of hot gas and dark matter. These are some of the largest structures in the universe. Collisions between clusters of galaxies cause a huge release of energy. It is unlike anything seen since the Big Bang.

The shock wave length is about 1.6 millionlight years. The image behind the first collision shows a second shock wave of the same size. Scientists call such an explosion an upward explosion, usually it occurs as a result of a complex interaction of gases. The image also labels the brightest and most massive galaxy in each cluster.

Such shock waves play an important role forother areas of research. For example, the radiation that solar wind strikes create can adversely affect the operation of spacecraft, as well as people in space.
