Sensory room in VR reduces depression and anxiety in people with autism

Psychologists from the University of Western Sydney studied the impact of immersive technologies on people with

disability associated with mentalretardation and autism spectrum disorders. The study found that using the Evenness Virtual Reality sensory space resulted in significant improvements in anxiety, depression, and sensory processing.

For a first of its kind preIn the study, researchers recruited 31 adult participants who were diagnosed with a disability related to intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, or both. All participants used the Evenness Virtual Reality virtual sensory room for five months.

The sensory room is a specially organizedan environment equipped with special equipment to stimulate various human perception systems. In Evenness Virtual Reality, such a space is reproduced in a virtual environment. The space is equipped with various elements that affect vision, hearing and the tactile system. At the same time, a computer, a helmet and virtual reality gloves are enough to work.

The results of the experiment showed that immersiveEvenness VR sensory space with interactive vision, hearing and touch has improved the condition of patients, including reducing anxiety, depression and increasing the perception of sensory information.

In the scientific community, there has already been a relativeconsensus on the usefulness of sensory rooms for working with people with autism spectrum disorders, the authors write. But the organization of classical physical space requires significant costs. Preliminary test results suggest that VR technologies could make such therapy more accessible.
