Shooting video in motion on a fragile phone is stupid. Here's a camera for that, with quality like the best iPhones.

I honestly admit - I don’t jump with a parachute, I don’t ride a wakeboard, or even ride a bike (let alone skateboarding),

but nevertheless, I am absolutely sure that GoProThe Hero 10 is an essential camera for anyone making any kind of video content today. Videographers, bloggers, advertisers - if you need to shoot on the go, then you will definitely appreciate this small but very capable action camera. DiscussFerraGoPro Hero 10 rating

Appearance

Like previous models, the GoPro Hero 10 Black is a fairly compact camera, measuring 71.8 x 50.8 x 33.6 mm - it's length, height and thickness, respectively. Weight - 153 grams.

If you, like me, used only the mostSince the first generations of GoPro cameras (my last one was Hero 4 Black), then keep in mind that an additional plastic case for mounting is no longer necessary. And to protect the camera itself, too - without any cases, the camera can be immersed in water to a depth of 10 meters. Although, of course, if you are counting on serious shock loads, then it is better to get a case (to be honest, I would not swim to such a depth without a case). But if it suddenly falls out on the asphalt while you perform a somersault on a skateboard, then you should not worry about it, unless a tank then passes along it.

For installation on various mounts you needbend the “ears” located at the bottom of the camera. They are pretty strong and hold well, you just can't tear them off (not that I tried hard, but still). The width of the legs and the diameter of the hole are the same as before - I took out the old tripod mount (under the thread) and was able to screw the camera to it.

GoPro Hero 10 is equipped with two screens - front and back. The rear screen is touch-sensitive and can be used to control all settings (but you can also use the GoPro Quik mobile app).

The front screen is designed for selfies - you can use it to control the frame when shooting yourself. The screens are bright enough and do not fade in sunny weather.

The camera also has two physical buttons, which need to be squeezed straight. That is, directly with force, otherwise they will not work. On the side is the power button and mode selection, on top is the shooting button. It is possible to configure the camera so that it goes directly from the off position to the shooting mode.

If you place the GoPro Hero 10 facing you, thenon the left, it will have a compartment with a battery (1720 mAh), a slot for a memory card and a USB-C connector. The latter, by the way, allows you to connect the camera to a computer or smartphone for data transfer or even for use as a webcam (on Windows 11, however, this is a problem now - I don't even want the application to start, but it worked on macOS) ...

However, there is a big minus here - whenWhen connecting the camera with a wire, the compartment cover will stick out (it can be removed altogether, but then there is a risk of losing it). This is done to protect the USB-C connector from water and not to use any additional rubber plugs. So it’s better to connect the camera to your smartphone via Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, the PC webcam over Wi-Fi no longer works.

Features and video quality

GoPro Hero 10 can do a lot, but firstturn I would like to talk about the most important thing. GoPro Hero 10 simply captivated me with its stabilization - it's really something incredible, and you can see that since the creation of the very first GoPro camera, the company has worked most of all in this direction. Yes, the quality of video shooting here is also at an altitude, but still - such a small camera, even without optical stabilization, holds the frame so well?

Trim from video entirely filmed on GoPro Hero 10 from Benjamin Ortega YouTube channel

The bottom line is that stabilization like GoPro is difficultfound even in all these fashionable portable stabilizers. On this point, the real competitor is DJI Pocket 2, but just compare the dimensions! That is, the processor in GoPro manages to process the image in such a way as to maintain a high frame rate and ensure perfect smoothness. And yes, to clarify the situation, the stabilizer even works in 5.3K/60 fps mode!

For this review, I made a short video where I combined various usage scenarios. As I already said, I don’t do active sports, so I had to run and ride a bike.

In particular.I jumped from my floor to the first, then ran after the “bus”, rode my bike, and all this time I just held the camera in my hand. I didn't use any additional stabilizers and other nonsense, I didn't even use a stick.

I was especially impressed by the optional modehorizon control. You can tilt the camera up to almost 45 degrees - and it will still keep an even horizon in the frame! But electronic stabilization also has one huge disadvantage - it doesn’t work well at night, which can also be seen in my video (the very end). In this case, not only stabilization suffers, but also the quality of the video itself. In such conditions, cameras with an optical stabilizer (for example, an action camera from Sony) will perform better.

At the same time, GoPro can shoot in resolutions up to5.3K (5312x2988 pixels) with a frequency of 60 fps, and in 4K resolution - up to 120 fps. The maximum shooting speed is 240 fps, but in a resolution of 2.7K (2704x1520 pixels), which is also an incredible result (may the reader forgive me these emotions - before Hero 10, I only used GoPro Hero 4). To support all functions, you will need a fast memory card - the camera itself recommends compliance with the V30 standard.

However, if you are not very familiar with GoPro,Then you might be worried that all those fisheye distortions won't work for you. But there is no need to worry here either - the camera allows you to switch between several viewing angles. Moreover, the ultra-wide angle is available in modes both with and without distortion (in the latter case, the picture is slightly cropped). There is also a regular wide angle and a narrow angle.

Of course, there is no optical zoom here, and because the narrower the angle, the more the picture from the 23-megapixel matrix is cropped. This, however, is beneficial for stabilization - so that even in ultra-wide-angle mode, when you turn on maximum stabilization with leveling the horizon, the picture is also cropped a little.

The disadvantage of this approach is obvious - the narrower the angle, thelower quality. GoPro is a finicky camera when it comes to light, but it still tries hard. Let's not forget about the ability to shoot Protune, which was still in older models - however, here it is included not as a separate mode, but as simply a set of parameters for manual control (shutter speed, ISO, color, sharpness, etc.). In case you want to mess around with setting all these parameters in the video editor later. By the way, there is also the so-called “audio recording in RAW”, which in fact is the recording of a separate WAV file when shooting video.

Speaking of sound. The camera records quite good sound, but is quite sensitive to wind protection. However, it can be turned off - and, I would even say, itis worthdisable if you are not going to shoot withstreet. Sometimes the camera mistakes some extraneous sounds or just a slight movement of air for wind, and then it muffles the sound very much, which is sometimes completely unnecessary. It sounds like you're talking into a pillow.

At the same time, when a strong wind rises - such jamming, on the contrary, is beneficial to the recording - you can make out at least some words. And overall the sound quality is good.

In addition to video, you can take photos with the camera.with all the same lens focal length settings. However, regardless of the selected viewing angle, the pictures are taken with a resolution of 5568x4176 pixels. and their quality is well somewhere at the level of a budget smartphone for 12-14 thousand rubles.

Photo in "Wide" mode

And last but not least, “interesting” shooting modes. There is a time lapse; delayed shooting (the camera starts shooting at exactly the specified time); There is a HindSight function, thanks to which the recording begins even before you press the button - it can be set for 15 or 30 seconds, which is simply magical, in my opinion.

There is also a DVR mode whenthe camera records video endlessly, overwriting it when the time limit is reached. The limit can be set for 5, 20, 60 or 120 minutes. True, in this mode, the resolution and frame rate are limited - a maximum of either 4K / 30 fps or Full-HD / 120 fps.

But the most interesting thing is that all shooting modes can beassign to various presets (including creating presets yourself) and switch literally “on the fly”. You can create a lot of presets, but, unfortunately, you cannot come up with your own names for them - you can only choose from the available ones. For some reason they didn’t make a keyboard for the screen, but they could have done it, in my opinion.

How does all this good look in comparison withsmartphones? Well, here's a look at how the GoPro Hero 10 performs in comparison with the iPhone 13 Pro, and the stabilizer was also stuck to the iPhone - in your hands the picture from the mobile phone will jump much sharper than in the video below:

Autonomy

On average, the GoPro Hero 10 is ratedfor about 1.5 hours of work. Unfortunately, there are too many variables here to be more precise - both the resolution / frame rate of the videos, and whether you use the connection to the smartphone while shooting. In theory, you can have time to "land" the camera faster, or you can stretch the "pleasure" for 2 hours. Actually, I indicate this figure only so that you understand whether your GoPro Hero 10 is working correctly if you decide to buy it ... With previous models, it happened that individual copies were discharged in literally 10-20 minutes - and this was an obvious marriage. This happens, it is not scary and you can replace the product, but you just need to understand that this is not the norm.

Competitors

GoPro Hero 10 is an expensive camera.A kit without accessories will cost you 50 thousand rubles - this is significantly more expensive than all previous GoPro, but judging by numerous tests and reviews on the Internet, the Hero 10 is really the best GoPro today.
Unfortunately, I do not have sufficient competence,to talk about numerous action cameras that cost several times cheaper, so let's just see what else you can buy for these same 50 thousand rubles.

DJI Pocket 2 Creator Combo

DJI Pocket 2

For the same 50 thousand rubles you can buy a cameraDJI Pocket 2 with a full set of essential accessories (Creator Combo). Compared to the GoPro Hero 10, you will get higher picture and sound quality, as well as wider zoom capabilities, and a whole bunch of accessories (and without them, DJI Pocket 2 can be bought for “only” 36 thousand rubles).

However, there will also be a lot of disadvantages.Firstly, DJI Pocket 2 is still not an action camera, no matter what various stores write. It is relatively large, it does not have any moisture protection, and it cannot be attached to a helmet. Plus, the DJI Pocket 2 is limited to 4K/60 fps, while the GoPro Hero 10 offers up to 4K/120 fps or 5.3K/60 fps.

Those. The DJI Pocket 2 is perhaps more suitable for a vlogger and videographer, but not so much as to leave the GoPro far behind. So, the GoPro is much more versatile due to the fact that it is almost indestructible.

Ricoh theta v

Ricoh theta v

For 44 thousand rubles you can buy a Ricoh cameraTheta V, whose main feature is shooting 360-degree panoramas. By the way, GoPro also has a model with 360-degree shooting - GoPro Max, and it also costs around 50 thousand.

However, Ricoh is also not very keen on an action camera.since by itself, it is not waterproof, but you can buy a special casing, which separately costs as much as 23 thousand rubles! (By the way, the GoPro MAX is waterproof and without covers.)

Ricoh also only shoots at 4K / 30 fps, but the quality, judging by the materials from the Internet, is higher than that of the GoPro.

Total

To be honest, it's impressive that GoPro succeededmake at the same time a full-fledged action camera, protected from both water and shock, and at the same time leave it quite versatile. The ability to work as a webcam complements the picture. The only thing that GoPro is not suitable for is subject, as well as portrait photography. This camera “loves” to shoot action and wide shots, where a person, even if he is present, is a part of the world around him - perfect for vlogs, keeping a personal video archive (like you went on vacation with your family, for example), various filming.

GoPro can be attached almost anywhere -If you have some kind of need, even the most fantastic one, then with a probability of 99.99% an accessory has already been invented for this. Mounting under a bicycle saddle, on a pipe, mounting on belts on the chest, on the head, on children, on a dog - all this is already there.

In fact, if you do video content, it doesn't matterwhich, the GoPro Hero 10 camera can be useful to you. And most importantly, this baby fits easily in the palm of your hand, but at the same time “gives” you video in 4K / 120 fps or 5.3K / 60 fps.
