Siberian scientists create supercapacitors from pine nut shells

Researchers from the Engineering Center of the Institute of Catalysis of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have developed

technology for the production of carbon materials for supercapacitors from pine nut shells.The properties of this material make it possible to create elements with a high density of stored energy.

Most often used in the production of electrodesactivated carbon materials that have a highly developed porous structure. The increased density of the pine nut shell is “inherited” by the electrodes: they are dense and have a high specific surface area. As a result, the supercapacitor achieves high energy-capacity indicators per unit volume, the developers note.

Для производства активированного угля для electrodes, scientists carbonize crushed shells in a fluidized catalyst bed. The resulting biochar is mixed with an alkali solution, treated at a temperature of 600–1000 °C, washed and dried. As a result, the researchers were able to obtain coals with a maximum specific surface area of ​​2200 m²/g.

From the resulting carbon material, we formthin tablets that are pressed into metal cases of flat batteries. This allows you to test materials in conditions that are as close to real as possible. The tests carried out indicate that activated charcoal from walnut shells is promising for practical use.

A supercapacitor is a device that needsonly 10-20 s for a full charge, and it can be charged and discharged hundreds of thousands of times. Such devices differ from common lithium-ion batteries in their high charging speed, power and stable operation after many charge cycles. They are used in the energy, electric transport and space industries. A new technology for the production of electrodes will increase the energy efficiency of such devices.
