Smoke from fires impairs memory and affects the behavior of baby rhesus monkeys

Scientists investigated the consequences of the devastating Camp Fire in California in 2018.

The fire began spreading on November 8, 2018, coinciding with the breeding season for rhesus monkeys housed in open cages at the California National Primate Research Center.

The researchers selected 89 baby monkeys,born 6 months after the start of the fire. Of these, 52 were conceived prior to November 22, meaning they were exposed to smoke during the first trimester of their pregnancy, while the remaining 37 were conceived after the fire had stopped.

Scientists have shown that infants exposed toexposure to smoke, there was an increase in the amount of C-reactive protein associated with inflammatory processes. In stressful situations, this group of macaques produced less cortisol. In addition, the researchers found that the pups exhibited memory impairment (compared to controls and historical observations of other macaques) and passive behavior.

The findings, according to scientists,indicate that some components of smoke from forest fires are teratogens, that is, they disrupt the process of normal embryonic development. The researchers believe that phthalates, which have been found in smoke, may be a key influence.

Zoologists note that, unlike otherIn mammals, the placenta of primates, including humans and rhesus monkeys, produces hormones that support brain development via the adrenal system. The scientists believe that the effects of smoke components on the adrenal glands could lead to the developmental disorders described in their work.

Scientists plan to conduct additionala study involving children who were conceived in Davis during Camp Fire using in vitro fertilization. Choosing only IVF pregnancies will allow you to accurately set the date of conception, scientists say.
