Sony purchases 22 million AMD processors for PlayStation 5

Sony management reported the company's financial achievements for the second quarter of this year. Financial

director Hiroki Totoki announced that Sony has soldmore than 10 million PlayStation 5 consoles, but at the same time stopped selling the version with a Blu-ray drive because it was generating losses. By the way, the price of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition model on the market is still higher than the recommended one.

The forecasted part of the financial report states, that the Japanese tech giant is set to sell 14.6 million PlayStation 5 consoles this year, bringing its total annual sales to over 22 million. To avoid problems with the lack of components for the PlayStation 5, the Japanese company has already purchased 22 million AMD chips. This is an important achievement as TSMC's 7nm SoC pipelines are still overwhelmed.

Technology portals believe that whenIn the distribution of production capacity, AMD favors console systems over chips. This can explain the shortage and, as a result, high retail prices for the Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards, which are based on a 7nm GPU with the second generation RDNA architecture. On the other hand, even after the measures and announcements made by Sony, the Japanese company still cannot meet the huge demand for the PlayStation 5.
