Elon Musk's SpaceX invites researchers and Internet security specialists to hack the network
SpaceX made the announcement aftersecurity researcher Lennert Wouters said last week that he was able to hack Starlink using a $25 homemade device. He said he had conducted a test of SpaceX's bug-finding program, in which enthusiasts submit search results for potential vulnerabilities in the satellite network.
In a six-page document entitled"Starlink salutes security researchers," SpaceX congratulated Wouters on the hack. His experiment using a homemade circuit board should not worry Starlink users and will not have a direct impact on the satellites, the company added.
Even the company's full-time engineers are always tryingto hack Starlink to improve the service and make it more secure, SpaceX said, calling on everyone to help the service work. “We allow responsible security researchers to conduct their own testing and provide monetary rewards if they find and report vulnerabilities,” SpaceX said in the document.
Researchers who conduct non-destructive testing at Starlink and report results will receive between $100 and $25,000.
The company's website has already tagged 32 researchers who have reported significant security issues with Starlink. At the same time, the average payment over the last three months was $973.
