
The Spanish army has decided to purchase the Estonian robotic tank THeMIS, developed by Milrem Robotics.
What is known
The Spanish Ministry of Defense wants to evaluatethe effectiveness of the use of ground-based drones and understand how they can strengthen the country's Armed Forces. Milrem Robotics believes that such robots can become as popular as unmanned aerial vehicles.
Estonian robot is equipped with a hybrid engine,which is characterized by low noise level during operation. The maximum payload weight is 1200 kg. The modular design allows you to quickly change equipment depending on the tasks of the mission.
THeMIS has a tracked chassis and can developspeed up to 20 km/h. The weight of the robotic tank is 1630 kg. In the basic configuration, the equipment is equipped with a stretcher, boxes for equipment and a box with tools. Optionally, the tank can be equipped with light weapons (ADER, defender, MSI-DS Terrahawk, PROTECTOR). A modification is also available with the Hero-120 system with six kamikaze drones that have a warhead weighing 3.5 kg and can remain in the air for 60 minutes.
The robot received an infrared camera with software protection.military standard MIL-STD-810G. Previously, 12 countries bought the tank. Seven of them are members of NATO. Spain became the 13th user of the THeMIS robotic system.
