Sputnik V fights worse against South African variant of COVID-19

The alpha strain of the coronavirus has the N501Y mutation present in the key junction of the spike protein. He

appeared in the UK in late fall 2020.

The beta strain of coronavirus is one of several SARS-CoV-2 variants that is of particular concern. It has a higher contagiousness and danger than the conventional version.

The authors of the new work found out how actively the antibodies from the Sputnik V vaccine bind to the widespread new variations of the coronavirus.

Certain variations of coronavirus can be avoidedthe action of antibodies from the vaccine, and the nature of this maneuver is different. At the same time, we emphasize that the Sputnik V vaccine will protect patients from severe forms of COVID-19 and when infected with these virus strains.

During the work, the authors collected blood serum from12 residents of Argentina, who at the beginning of 2021 received two doses of the Russian vaccine, in order to understand how actively the antibodies from these samples will combine with literally dummies of SARS-CoV-2, which contained the proteins of the coronavirus envelope.

It turned out that the South South African strain or beta, as well as some varieties of other strains of SARS-CoV-2 with the E484K mutation, reduce the effectiveness of the vaccine.
