Starlink 2.0 satellites will become “invisible”: they cannot be detected with the naked eye

SpaceX spoke about the latest updates to Starlink 2.0 satellites. According to company representatives, they will reduce

interference to the global astronomical community.

Now the satellites will reflect sunlight,while orbiting the Earth. If effective as advertised, they will make the satellites "invisible to the naked eye when at standard operating altitude."

SpaceX has developed a special mirror film for Starlink 2.0 satellites. It will reduce the brightness of the reflection by ten times.

The company also says it will usedarker materials to make the surface less reflective. For Starlink 2.0, it will use low reflectivity black paint for components that cannot be coated with mirror film.

Previously, Starlink satellites have already had a negative impactimpact on the global astronomy community. As Samantha Lawler, an astronomer at the University of Regina in Canada, told IE in a recent interview, scientists have to do less and much more difficult science.

“The same amount of scientific research costs taxpayers more because of a private company,” said Lawler, who conducted the study.

Now SpaceX has released a public document, inwhich described how it plans to reduce the influence of Internet satellites on the astronomical community. The new measures are especially important given the recent statement by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. The company will launch more than 4,200 Starlink satellites within 18 months, representing two-thirds of all active satellites. Roughly 2,300 satellites are currently in orbit, and SpaceX has permission to launch another 30,000.

The International Astronomical Union's Center for the Protection of the Sky from Interference with Satellite Constellations (IAU CPS), organized to combat Starlink and other mega-constellations, has approved the upgrade.
