Cooler than the Galaxy Fold: Samsung showed a smartphone with a “stretchable display” at CES 2020

Samsung is already working on the second version of the Galaxy Fold, which may come in a clamshell form factor. Yet this

not the only “flexible smartphone” that the Korean company is preparing.

What is known

According to ETNews (via Phone Area), Samsungbrought to CES 2020 a concept smartphone with a rollable screen. The company arranged a show only for a select few, so no official photos of the device were found online. According to the source, the smartphone has a button, when pressed, part of the display extends, turning, for example, a 6-inch smartphone into an 8-inch one.

It sounds complicated and strange, but at the end of 2019A patent for a gadget with a similar screen was found online. The document states that the smartphone uses a flexible display that rolls inward. Samsung showed a similar screen back at SID 2016, so they have been working on the technology for several years.

Visualize a secret Samsung smartphoneLetsGoDigital decided to make several renderings based on the patent. In one version, the display becomes longer, and in the second, wider, copying the Galaxy Fold form factor when unfolded.

Journalists of the publication note that smartphoneswith rollable displays will not appear soon. It will take the company at least three years to turn the concept into a commercial prototype. So for now all that remains is to wait for the Galaxy Fold 2 and the like.
