A team of researchers led by New York University has studied stem cells,
Hair coloring depends on whether you receivestem cells, the precursors of melanocytes, the signal that causes them to become mature cells and produce the protein pigments responsible for color, the study authors explain. These stem cells have no other function but constantly multiply to form pigment cells.
During normal hair growth, they constantly move back and forth along the maturity axis between compartments of the developing hair follicle.It is during this movement that the cells are exposed to various influences that affect theon their maturity.
In particular, researchers have found that certainthe location inside the growing hair causes the transformation of stem cells from the most primitive state to the transit-amplifying one, necessary for further development.
The researchers found that asAs hair ages, falls out, and then grows back repeatedly, more and more stem cells get stuck inside the bulge of the hair follicle. By remaining there, they do not mature into a transient amplifying state and do not return to their original location in the germinal component of the hair follicle, where the proteins would push them to regenerate into pigment cells.
This study explains why haircontinue to grow (other stem cells are not affected by this process), but lose their color with age. Researchers believe that understanding the mechanism that leads to graying will help find a way to reverse the process.
