Oblivious to the video camera, the squidHistioteuthis heteropsis traveled across the ocean, occasionally twisting and unwinding its tentacles as its ghostly white fins swayed. It was found at a depth of 725 meters.

The researchers used remotelyoperated by the Doc Ricketts ROV when they spotted a squid in the Monterey Canyon off the California coast. It is almost as large as the famous Grand Canyon, making it one of the deepest submarine canyons on the West Coast of the United States, which is why it is called the “twilight canyon.” According to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Institute (MBARI), the region is home to a variety of marine life.
