Scientists have conducted two experiments since 1298Americans and Australians. They found that men and those who were sexually conservative (i.e., those who opposed casual sex) preferred norms that made sexual relationships traditional and exclusive.
In the first experiment, volunteers were shownreading materials that explained that either heterosexual or homosexual people are promiscuous, or that heterosexuals or homosexuals do not engage in promiscuity. In the second experiment, participants read that either heterosexual or homosexual people prefer modest weddings or that either heterosexual or homosexual people prefer very expensive weddings.
The researchers found that the conditionsThe experiment influenced men's attitudes towards same-sex marriage. But this was not the case for women. Men, on the other hand, reported greater dislike of same-sex marriage if they were convinced that people would prefer cheap weddings.
