Passing a current through the brain for 20 minutes may improve the memory of older people, according to a new study.
Brain stimulation was performed usinga device similar to a swimming cap studded with electrodes. Through them, current is supplied to certain areas of the brain. The research team was specifically interested in two areas: one related to working memory and the other related to long-term memory.
The research group divided 60 participantsaged 65 to 88 years into three groups: one group wore the device but did not receive electrical stimulation; the second received stimulation in the area associated with working memory; and the third - in the area associated with long-term memory. The researchers also tested how subjects remembered words.
The study showed that both working andlong-term memory improved within four days. Currently, the device used is just an experimental instrument. But it is safe and has few side effects.
