Study: Regular aspirin reduces chance of ovarian cancer

An association between frequent aspirin use and a reduced risk of ovarian cancer was observed in individuals with

genetic risk factors below and above the median. The risk reduction was greatest for serous and high-grade endometrioid tumors.

Researchers from the US, Australia and the UKcombined an analysis of eight previous case-control studies by the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium to assess the association between frequent aspirin use and risk of developing ovarian cancer. Frequent aspirin use was defined as daily or near daily use of aspirin for six months or longer. The researchers only included people from eight studies with available genetic data.

The analysis included patients with non-cysticovarian cancer in the amount of 4,476 people and 6,659 participants in the control group. 575 patients and 1,030 controls reported frequent aspirin use. The 13% reduction in ovarian cancer risk associated with frequent aspirin use was not affected by the Patient Polygenic Risk Scale (PGS), an estimate of risk based on known genetic correlations with the disease.

In the analysis, people with PGS above 80%, i.e. groupswith the highest genetic risk, there was no risk reduction associated with aspirin use. However, the investigators note that this group did not meet the survey data's statistical confidence index of 95%, meaning that although the study was unable to confirm a risk reduction, this should not be considered a null result, but rather an area requiring further study. study.

Researchers note that when consumedAspirin may cause serious side effects, including stomach ulcers and hemorrhagic stroke. Additionally, the incidence of ovarian cancer in the general population is low (1.3% of women, according to the American Cancer Society), and frequent use of aspirin is not a recommended preventative measure for all women.
