Scientists asked 133 undergraduate studentsthink about your last sexting experience and the person they sexted with. Participants were shown descriptions of the five stages of relationship development and were asked to indicate which stage they were in when they had virtual sex with their partner.

It turned out that people sent and received moreintimate messages as the relationship progressed to higher stages of development. The researchers also observed a negative relationship between attachment avoidance and frequency of sexting.
