At the same time, Americans who are married andthose who have had bariatric surgery are also more than twice as likely to get divorced. The researchers saw this when they looked at data from 1,441 American adults who underwent surgery for severe obesity between 2006 and 2009. Participants ranged in age from 19 to 75 years old, and 79% were women. At the time of the operation, 62% were married or living with a partner, while the rest were single.
The scientists noted that there were many factorswhich increased the likelihood that the participant's relationship status would change after surgery. Some of these were expected: younger participants and those who lived with a partner before surgery were more likely to marry within the next five years. But some were surprised. For example, after losing weight, many divorced. Scientists attributed this to the fact that due to weight loss, patients increased libido, and they and their partner could no longer get along on this topic.
