Supersonic aircraft could fly around the planet in a few hours

Swiss startup Destinus is developing a hydrogen-powered passenger plane. He will shorten the flight.

from Europe to Australia from 20 to 4 hours.The company has been testing the Eiger prototype for the past two years and has now announced successful test flights in late 2022. Destinus was recently selected by the Spanish Ministry of Science to participate in a strategic initiative. The startup was allocated money to conduct additional research and development in the field of supersonic flights on hydrogen.

Destinus is currently working with Spanishby ITP Aero to create a facility for testing hydrogen engines. A grant from the Spanish government will finance the construction of a test site near Madrid.

Hydrogen energy is a subject of manyresearch and development because of its environmental friendliness: the main by-products of hydrogen combustion are heat and water. Researchers from RMIT University in Melbourne have created 3D-printed catalysts that provide flight speeds five times faster than sound and also neutralize the resulting heat. Future commercial aircraft flying at these speeds will take passengers from London to New York in just 90 minutes.

According to a statement from startup representativesDestinus, thanks to new technology, a flight from Frankfurt to Sydney will take 4 hours 15 minutes, and a flight from Frankfurt to Shanghai will take 2 hours 45 minutes (that's eight hours less than current airlines offer). This project is part of Spain's efforts to develop and the production of hydrogen vehicles for various applications.
