Scientists have come up with a new alternative to antibiotics that stop working effectively - this is
Decades of overuseantibiotics have led to many species of bacteria developing resistance to these drugs. Such a health crisis could claim 10 million lives annually by 2050.
The authors of the new work examined a compound called epoxycosatrienoic acid (EETS). It performs a regulatory function in the body, limiting inflammation.
Despite this, the body suppresses the work of EETSduring infections so that immune cells can take action. The authors tried to block EETS even more using a synthetic molecule called EEZE.
The team tested the molecule in mice.infected with Streptococcus pneumoniae, a bacterium that usually causes pneumonia. It worked. The number of bacteria in the rodents' lungs was significantly reduced. These new molecules can be used in an inhaler or in tablet form to help kill bacteria.
