Telescope from NASA will study the composition of dark matter in our galaxy

Stellar streams look like strands of hair extending outward from some galaxies. Typically these streams consist of

stars that suddenly disappeared from the galaxy. 

Previously, astronomers conducted simulations and found outthat galaxies grow partly by consuming small groups of stars. If a dwarf galaxy falls into the orbit of a larger one, then the gravity of the first one is distorted. Then its stars scatter and fall into a larger galaxy. 

The Milky Way is home to at least 70 stellar streams. This means that it has probably swallowed up at least 70 dwarf galaxies or globular star clusters.

Telescope pictures of the Milky WayNancy Grace Roman will help astronomers determine the movement of stars. Further, based on this information, it will be possible to find out what dark matter consists of - invisible matter that can only be detected due to its gravitational influence.

One theory suggests that dark mattercold or consists of heavy, slow particles. If this is the case, then it should gather together in galactic halos - this can disrupt stellar streams. In this case, the telescope will record these changes. As a result, it will be possible to narrow the range of potential materials that dark matter can consist of.
